ON BOARD A PLANE: TRY TO DEFUSE TENSIONS AND CREATE COMMON GROUND.

Conflict solving  with  the help of  emotional intelligence has been a key issue for me  since 1998 when on board a KLM wide body  plane  from  Frankfurt  to  Dubai, a  hostile man from the Middle East threatened to blow up the plane.

The uncontrollable man,  holding  a  burning  lighter  in  one hand and a bottle with a  liquid  flammable substance in the other,  created  havoc  among  Crew and  passeng- ers.  When, however the man approached my seat and I faced him  and managed  to talk him out of the very dangerous situation by using emotional based negotiation, beyond reason," says Harald Jan Dahle.

The successful outcome was only made possible by using an    emotional based  intelligent approach. The  terrorist gave Mr. Dahle  the  burning  lighter and     the bottle with liquid substance. Throughout the reminder  of the journey the  man continued to be somewhat erratic,  but   controll- able.  Dan  Shapiro at   Harvard was informed  by  a  mail from  Petrofilm   about   the   successful   outcome of the dramatic incident on board the KLM jetliner.
